What is Boxing Day?
Boxing Day is a holiday that’s observed in Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) and some commonwealth countries, including Canada.
It used to be a day when servants, tradespeople, and those who were less fortunate were given gifts.
According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, the origin of the name “Boxing Day” could come from the opening of boxes that were in churches to collect donations to help poor people.
However, it could also come from the boxes of gifts that workers were given by their employers on the day after Christmas.
Since servants were required to work on December 25, they observed the Christmas holiday on December 26.
Now, Boxing Day is mainly associated with shopping sales and deals at malls and online.
